Blogging Is Easy
October 18, 2006 | Filed Under nyc, techie | Leave a Comment
And now with some interesting offerings from Google, it’s getting easier. I’m writing this post using Google Docs . I can then simply configure my blog settings in Google and send posts directly from it. Google Docs allows me to add collaborators, so Ashley and I can edit posts at the same time.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that I’ll take full advantage of this gain in productivity. Everyone knows that I have not been the most loyal blogger in the world, and I tend to overlook writing about stuff that you care about (namely, what life is like in New York.) I think it’s mostly because life in New York is fairly routine. I take the subway to work, sit in front of a computer for 8 hours a day writing Java or Perl or C# or whatever is needed for a project. Then I take the subway home, try to work out, eat, and spend time working on my personal projects or watching TV. The routine has taken a pretty fun turn this week though because we got a Macbook – Barney – which is SO much faster than our iMac (although I am still fond of Homer.)
I’ll throw this out there to keep you interested. I’m currently working on a redesign for this site because the current look is getting a little old. I promise to give the blog a clean and modern look, and we’ll all be happy. No promises that the new look will be soon. I have to figure out the Wordpress Theme Editor first.
Net Neutrality - the Daily Show’s take
July 21, 2006 | Filed Under techie | Leave a Comment
I’ve written about Net Neutrality before, and I added that odd “Save the Internet” button on the right. And you’re wondering what in the world I’m talking about… the Internet is just a series of tubes, right? Anyway, the Daily Show had a great explanation of Internet Neutrality by the “I’m a PC” guy – John Hodgeman.
5th Avenue Apple Store

I need to make a confession… I’m a huge Apple tech nerd. I’m sure that comes as a complete shock to everyone who reads this blog. And recently, there was an epic event in the Apple nerd world – the opening of the new 5th Avenue Apple Store. Here is a picture of the “Cube” from across the street.
I have a whole lot more pictures here on Flickr.com.
Update to Task Manager

I have made a recent update to my task manager app. I’ve changed some of the interactivity of the site. However, not everything is working correctly in Internet Explorer… but everyone should be using Firefox by now anyway
update 5/8 @ 8:21 pm – OK, I figured out the issue with Internet Explorer. It is very picky about the Javascript syntax, so it was breaking although Firefox wasn’t. It’s fixed now, however it’s still better to use Firefox… trust me.

Ashley and I are debating the new image at the top of the page. I won’t mention who thinks what, but I would like to know your opinions on it. So, take a look and post a comment.
I’m watching you

Yes, this is a little sad, but I can only blame myself. I know that I need to put more content on the site. I want you to like us.
I was impressed that 11 people visited the site last week.
If you are curious, this is a screenshot of the Google Analytics report. It’s a great tool for tracking website usage, and it’s free!
A Change of Venues

This is just an announcement. I have moved www.nycnortons.com to a new web hosting company, Dreamhost. This means we won’t have any more unexpected outages, and I’m no longer freeloading on a gracious friend. Thanks Shane for letting me host the site on your server for so long.
Getting the Mac back

Our mac, Homer, has been in the shop for two weeks for a faulty power supply. I should have just order a new power supply myself. It would have taken me 15 minutes to replace it, but instead, I’ve had to spend countless hours on hold with Apple customer support to find out that they haven’t replaced the part yet.
Anyway, it’s ready for pick up now, so I’ll pick it up tonight, and I will add more posts to the blog. First and foremost – Marc and Amelia!
Off topic – Google just released a new web site analytics tool that I am now using on the site. Man, is there any information they are not going to have about me. I use them for my web searches, email, IM, and now they will know how many people are visiting nycnortons.com and what links they are clicking.
What is Skype?
October 5, 2005 | Filed Under techie | 1 Comment
Skype is a simple application that you can use to talk to other people over your Internet connection. It uses a technology called voice over IP or VOIP, and the calls are exceptionally clear.
If you are interested, you can download Skype here: skype.com and click “Add me to skype” to add me to your Skype contacts.
Another very useful VOIP tool is Google Talk: talk.google.com
I use this at work to talk to my co-workers. It’s easier than picking up a phone…really.
The only drawback to these applications is that you have to have a microphone that will work on your computer. They sell cheap ones on amazon.com if your computer doesn’t already have a built in mic. I’m fortunate because both my work laptop and my iMac at home have mics already.
If anyone is interested in help getting started with either Skype or Google Talk, please let me know.
Tommy, can you hear me

I found an interesting webapp called PodOMatic that allows me to record MP3 messages and podcasts. My first podcast is available here. To listen, just click on the arrow button.
It’s really just a test to see how simple it is to create a podcast. So far so good. I will start using it to post voice messages from time to time. Sometimes it’s just better to hear someone’s voice than read an email or blog post.
Let me know what you think.
