Come on Lost – Why are you doing this?

November 9th, 2006

Ashley and I are huge Lost fans. It is really the only show that I absolutely must watch every week. There are other shows that I enjoy, but I never feel compelled to watch them as soon as they air thanks in large part to Tivo. College football is really the only exception to this rule.

I was a bit disappointed and frustrated last night after watching the 6th and final episode for this mini-season for a couple reasons. The first and most frustrating reason is that the show is not schedule to return until Feb 7. The reason for this super extended break is because ABC in all of their TV scheduling savvy decided that this is the best way to ensure high ratings and capture the early TV season numbers – see this USA Today article for more. That does leave hard core fans like us – fans who visit Lost forums, discuss crazy theories, listen to Lost podcasts, etc – with nothing for 3 months. I wish they could have just started lost in January the way 24 does, but that’s just my opinion. The second reason is simply that they didn’t really resolve anything in this mini-season (with the exception of killing off Mr. Ekko who was one of my favorite characters.) I guess we do know that Kate picked Sawyer, but they are still in the same predicament they were in before… maybe worse.

On a positive note, it’s good to see Locke back in hunter form. “Look to the North, John”

I’m not going to dwell on yesterday very much, but I really appreciate the tribute in light. I took this picture from the roof of our apartment. The light goes as high as you can see.

Farewell, Andre

September 4th, 2006

We were there in Arthur Ashe Stadium for Agassi’s final match. It was a very moving moment when he bowed to the crowd for the last time. Becker, his opponent, passed on the spotlight and said that all the praise should be on Agassi. Read more about Agassi’s farewell on Nytimes.com.

Chihuly at the New York Botanical Garden

July 3rd, 2006

I don’t think I’ve mentioned it on this blog, but I have recently gone to work for Morgan Stanley. And one of the great benefits of working for a huge, New York based, financial company is that they sponsor lots of events around New York. For instance, I saw an announcement about Chihuly at the New York Botanical Gardens for free for Morgan Stanley employees. And since Ashley and I really enjoyed the Chihuly exhibit in Atlanta and we don’t often pass on events for that price, we went.

The New York Botanical Gardens are located just to the north of Fordham University in the Bronx, and they are very impressive. The gardens take up about 250 acres most of which is still original forest. According to the tram operator, it is the largest track of undeveloped land in New York City… which is remarkable in itself.

We weren’t as impressed with the Chihuly exhibit… maybe because we’ve seen a Chihuly exhibit before or because it was in a smaller space in Atlanta. Our general impression was that in the New York exhibit they didn’t try as hard to make the Chihuly art blend into the plant displays. There were sections of the exhibit that didn’t have any plants… just Chihuly. And that took away from the organic feel in a way.

I’m not saying it’s not worth seeing. As you can see, we got some great pictures. The rest of them are located here - flickr.com

Bronx Zoo – May 2006

May 29th, 2006

Ashley and I went to the Bronx Zoo yesterday, and I played around with our 400mm lens. I didn’t think I would be able to get good pictures without a tripod, but as you can see, the pictures turned out great. It helps that it was broad daylight.

Here is the rest of the photoset.

Ashley’s a golfer

May 26th, 2006

Since I have a two week hiatus from traveling, Daniel and I are taking advantage off all the New York has to offer in the spring. Thursday we went to Chelsea Piers (www.chelseapiers.com) to hit golf balls. My goal was a nice sweet contact with the ball and Daniel was focusing on a straight flight path. My lower back, wrists and shoulders are still sore, not to mention the palm of my right hand! Now I know why real golfers wear a glove. Maybe I will be a REAL golfer if I get a glove (I wonder if they come in pink). Everyone knows how I love sports accessories! Anyway, we took a mini video of my swing for my dad to analyze – feel free to post your comments dad! But for all of you who just see the above picture, my swing is GREAT! Look out Michelle Wie, I hear my second calling!

5th Avenue Apple Store

May 24th, 2006

I need to make a confession… I’m a huge Apple tech nerd. I’m sure that comes as a complete shock to everyone who reads this blog. And recently, there was an epic event in the Apple nerd world – the opening of the new 5th Avenue Apple Store. Here is a picture of the “Cube” from across the street.

I have a whole lot more pictures here on Flickr.com.
