Katrina

August 31st, 2005

Wow! I can’t believe what I’m reading on ajc.com today. Hurricane Katrina may have been the largest natural disaster in this country since the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco. Thousands of people may be dead, and 10s of thousands are now stuck in a city that is calling for a mandatory evacuation. Over a million people are without electricity.

Georgia is experiencing a gas shortage, and prices have climbed above $3 a gallon. Of course, this isn’t the worst part of the storm. It’s almost hard to believe that we experienced all the devastation we did.

We really need to be praying for the relief efforts in Mississippi and Louisiana.

AJC: Mayor: Katrina May Have Killed Thousands

update – 9/1
New Orleans is in near anarchy. I can’t believe the looters! They had to stop the emergency evacuation from the Superdome yesterday because of gunfire.

from the article:

Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco of Louisiana said that the death toll from Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath would be in the “thousands,” based on reports that she was receiving from officials throughout the state, The Associated Press said.

  • I agree about the looting. I could understand looting to get essentials, but there are people carting away TVs, setting fires, and even shooting at people who are stranded.

They stopped the evacuation of the Superdome yesterday because people were shooting at the rescuers. I can't fathom what would cause someone to do that.

After experiencing two direct hits last year (Francis & Jeanne) I can only guess what is going on with the people in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. The uncertainly of when they will have electricity and water is the only loss that I can share with them. It is impossible to imagine the stress level they have not knowing if they will ever be able to have the life style they enjoyed in the past.
The looting is unconscionable to me. Perhaps the need for water or diappers prempted any moral values they had.

Can't wait to strap my machine gun to to my truck this weekend. Feels like i'm living out a scene in The Road Warrior... can I be Mad Max?
